    The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is recruiting for a Executive Director, Volunteer and Member Engagement (U.S. and Canada) reporting to Vice President, Volunteer and Member Engagement

    CASE is a global not-for-profit and membership association whose vision is to advance education to transform lives and society. Its mission is to inspire, challenge and equip communities of professionals to act effectively and with integrity to champion the success of their institutions. Advancing education in over 3,700 member institutions, CASE has 88,000 individual members in 82 countries.

    Broad and growing communities of professional practice gather under the global CASE umbrella. Currently these include alumni relations, development services, digital, communications, fundraising, government relations, marketing and web. Individual members are at all stages of their career and may be working in universities, schools, colleges, cultural organizations or other not-for-profits. CASE membership also includes many corporate partners. CASE uses the intellectual capital and professional talents of an army of volunteers to advance its work.

    Headquartered in Washington, DC, CASE works across all continents from its regional offices in London, Singapore and Mexico City. CASE works to achieve a seamless experience for all its stakeholders: particularly its members, volunteers and staff. Working together across time zones and borders, CASE staff in all offices seek to make the ambitious OneCASE aspiration a reality.


    The Executive Director, Volunteer and Member Engagement (U.S. and Canada) will work within the region to:

    • Advance CASE’s mission and strategic priorities.
    • Achieve CASE’s strategic goal of increasing member engagement and loyalty.
    • Design and direct broad strategies that enhance and deepen member affinity.
    • Identify opportunities to grow membership and build relationships with member communities.
    • Build strong relationships with and steward senior volunteers.
    • Engage with colleague organizations to build mutually rewarding partnerships.
    • Serve as an ambassador for the organization to members and external constituents.


    This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and shape a new role within the organization as well as to help lead and grow a dynamic division that works to engage members and volunteers more effectively.




    Strategic Leadership

    • Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure the effective and timely delivery of the CASE strategic plan.
    • Provide leadership to and vision for regional member and volunteer engagement activities. Work collaboratively with CASE leadership and divisional Senior Directors to develop strategies and identify opportunities that promote increased affiliation and a greater sense of community. Ensure activities are integrated and aligned with global strategies and priorities.
    • Work with colleagues across the organization to meet regional membership recruitment and retention goals and to ensure that strategies are coordinated and aligned with broader organizational goals.
    • Identify new and emerging markets within the U.S. and Canada that may benefit from CASE membership. 
    • Identify potential program, product and service opportunities that can be tailored to meet current and future member needs within the region. Work with colleagues across the organization to evaluate viability, develop business/program plans and ensure that they are effectively delivered and appropriately aligned with broader organizational initiatives 
    • Develop alliances and partnerships with colleague organizations and advancement-related communities of practice within the region to establish mutually beneficial relationships, create content and develop new services.  
    • Lead regional member outreach initiatives to raise awareness of CASE. Work with CASE leadership and Senior Director. Member Engagement to identify key institutional leaders and senior professionals within the region; develop strategies to engage and involve them more deeply in the organization.
    • Work with Senior Director, Volunteer Relations to ensure that the activities and programs of CASE’s eight North American districts advance the CASE mission and are aligned with the broader regional and global organizational goals and objectives.
    • Identify and steward volunteer leaders within the region and strive to engage them more fully in CASE activities. Work with colleagues across the CASE divisions to identify potential new volunteer leaders and to increase the quality and number of volunteer opportunities available.
    • Advise the CASE President and other Executive Leadership Team members on issues, trends and challenges currently facing members within the U.S. and Canada and how CASE might help address them.
    • Serve as a key member of the global member engagement team; connect regularly with other regional Executive Directors to identify opportunities, increase organizational effectiveness, share strategies and best practices, establish consistent processes and ensure effective use of CASE resources.
    • Lead special projects and initiatives that serve members within the region.
    • Work with divisional Vice Presidents to support their regional strategies, operations and activities.


    Liaison Responsibilities

    • Help develop and form a new Regional Council for U.S. and Canada. Work closely with organizational leadership to ensure that the Council is aligned with, and appropriately supports, the OneCASE global governance design. Identify and onboard new Council members. Once established, work with Council members to identify regional priorities that advance CASE’s mission and align with global initiatives.
    • Serve as ex-officio member of each district cabinet.
    • Manage other volunteer committees, task forces and commissions as appropriate and requested.
    • Lead internal project teams as needed


    Fiscal Responsibilities

    • Work with U.S.-Canada Regional Council and CASE Vice Presidents to identify programming priorities and corresponding budgets for the region. Work with colleagues to manage those budgets to ensure that CASE resources are utilized effectively and responsibly.


    Management Responsibilities

    • Work with Vice President, Volunteer and Member Engagement to manage, motivate, hire and train divisional staff.
    • Share management responsibility for the Senior Director, Volunteer Relations and the Senior Director, Member Engagement. Guides, mentors and supervises their activities related to regional activities and projects.
    • Supervise the Director, Center for Community Colleges; set annual goals and objectives; mentor, guide and evaluate the manner in which the individual performs his/her work; encourages continual professional development.
    • Manage cross-divisional staff and groups as part of CASE’s emerging matrix management structure.
    • Help create and maintain a collegial, inclusive work environment that enables of staff to make a positive contribution to the organization and encourages mutual respect.
    • Ensure that information is communicated up, down and across the organization so staff are able to fulfill their responsibilities and make sound decisions.
    • Ensure that plans and programs are in place that advance CASE’s goals for inclusiveness. Demonstrate by example and communicate ways in which each CASE employee can enhance his or her awareness of the importance of inclusiveness to the organization.


    Performs other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned by Supervisor



    Education and Experience

    • Experience in one or more areas within institutional advancement (alumni relations, communications, marketing, fundraising or advancement services).
    • Significant experience working with, managing and stewarding high-level volunteers and members.
    • Experience managing volunteer boards, affinity groups, advisory committees or affiliate organizations.
    • Experience developing and implementing member or customer engagement strategies.
    • Senior management experience gained in a membership organization or educational environment.
    • Experience managing and motivating staff as well as working with colleagues across an organization to develop plans and deliver results.
    • Bachelor’s degree is required, advanced degree preferred.
